Travel & Recreation Program Descriptions

Playing travel hockey offers a distinctive and thrilling experience with numerous benefits. It enhances physical fitness, coordination, self-discipline, confidence, and teamwork while fostering lifelong enjoyment, meaningful friendships, and positive character development.

The Durango Ice Devils field coed travel teams at the 10U, 12U, and 14U levels, as well as a 19U Girls' team, competing in the Western Colorado Hockey League against teams from Aspen, Glenwood Springs, Grand Junction, Steamboat, Summit, Telluride, Vail, and West Elk/Gunnison. The 19U Girls' team shares similar experiences in the Colorado Girls Hockey League (CGHL).

We offer two distinct travel hockey experiences: the 'A' and 'B' teams. The 'B' team, positioned above recreational hockey, provides a natural progression from our Rec programs. It emphasizes skill development, equal opportunities, and fun, offering players the chance to succeed at their ability level with less financial, time, and travel commitment compared to the 'A' team. It also serves as a stepping stone for players aspiring to play 'A' hockey.

Conversely, the 'A' team is tailored for competitive players with a strong commitment and talent to contribute to the team's success. The 'A' philosophy is rigorous, demanding players to push themselves beyond their comfort zone, earn their positions on the powerplay and penalty kill lines, and establish themselves as key players in critical game moments. 'A' teams engage in more games and longer travel distances, requiring greater financial, time, and physical commitments compared to 'B' travel hockey.

2024-2025 Recreation Hockey Offerings

Recreation Team (Rec Team)

Ages 9-12

The Rec Team program has been designed to achieve several critical objectives. The first objective is to provide players between the ages of 9-12 who missed out on the mite/8U Beginner Hockey years with an exceptional opportunity to play ice hockey. Secondly, the program offers our membership players who have previous hockey experience the chance to hone their hockey skills in preparation for playing travel hockey in the future. The Rec Team environment is ideal for player skills development and overall growth.

Additionally, the affordable Rec Team program provides families with the flexibility of a less demanding schedule and commitment as compared to travel hockey. The program also helps promote and expand ice hockey in the community, attracting new hockey families to DAYHA membership.

The Rec Team structure provides a positive experience for all involved. Practices are held once a week on a weeknight, and in-house scrimmage games are played on weekends, usually on Sunday afternoons. Some scrimmages may involve inviting our Squirt ‘B’ team to participate to expose our recreational players to a higher level of play. The Rec Team plays a few games against other Rec Teams, both home and away, with limited travel weekends. The team will enjoy some weekends off to take advantage of all Durango has to offer. The hockey season generally runs from mid-October through mid-March.

Overall, the Rec Team program provides an exceptional opportunity for developing hockey skills, promoting ice hockey in the community, and creating a positive environment for players, families, and coaches alike.
